Robyn joins forces with Röyksopp

When Swedish songstress Robyn first met Röyksopp, it was a match made in digital heaven.

The trio have just finished shooting the video for The Girl And The Robot in the suburbs of west London.

The track, which is the second single to be lifted from Röyksopp’s new album Junior, tells the tale of an ill-fated romance between a woman and a machine.

“It works on many different levels,” explains a weary-eyed Torbjørn Brundtland.

“On one level it looks at a sci-fi future where people have relationships with machines. But also the word robot in Slavic means work.

“So it could be interpreted in another way, when someone becomes so dedicated to their work it becomes a problem in their relationship.”

For anyone who witnessed Röyksopp’s one off show at the London Royal Festival Hall earlier this month, The Girl And The Robot was the song that had everyone dancing in the aisles.

It was also the first time the Scandinavian threesome performed the track live together.

“I was amazed by the audience’s reception,” Robyn enthuses as she recoils into a leather sofa. “It was fantastic and it was so good to be onstage playing this song for the first time.

“It has this quality that you can dance and cry to at the same time and I think that’s something people enjoy.”

“It has our trademark on it with Robyn’s energy and I think that’s what caught people’s attention,” agrees Röyksopp’s Svein Berge.

The video, which trails Robyn as a teary-eyed girl chasing the affections of a robot researcher, also saw the bleepy electro duo make their first cameo appearance in a music clip.

“We decided to appear in it just because it felt right and natural,” Torbjørn says. “You can see us walking around in silver suits and red ties.”

The song was born from a melody which Torbjørn created with his sidekick Svein in their Norwegian home city Bergen.

“They sent it over to me so I started to think about what we could do with it and I wrote some melodies of my own,” Robyn explains.

“We spent a couple of days in the studio and then I didn’t hear anything for seven months.

“Eventually I got sent the song and it was totally perfect, it blew me away.”

Now that Robyn has featured on Röyksopp’s third long player, the singer said there’s a good chance the pair could appear on her next album.

“We’re talking about doing some more stuff together and maybe doing something on my album,” she says. “We’ve been discussing it so maybe it’s going to happen.”

Robyn confirmed that she has “written a few songs” for the follow-up to her self-titled 2007 album.

The blonde songstress said she is now planning to return to Sweden to work with Andreas Kleerup and Klas Åhlund, who produced her last record.

The Girl And The Robot is released on 15 June.
